When Elaine takes over a historic soapworks in the coastal village of Trefalen, she inherits more than specialized equipment and a walled botanical garden. The shop’s tools carry traces of old craft magic, Misty is the familiar of its late former owner, and someone in the village has gone to considerable trouble to bury the truth about a secret community of magical makers.

As Elaine rebuilds her business, cultivates herbs and flowers, and creates a new batch of soap in every mystery, murder repeatedly disrupts Trefalen’s markets, workshops, festivals, and closely guarded traditions. Her twenty-five years of soapmaking experience help her recognize inconsistencies others overlook, while Misty contributes feline instincts, cynical commentary, selective sweetness, and absolutely no respect for police procedure.

Each mystery features a complete investigation and satisfying solution, so the books can be enjoyed in any order. Readers who follow the entire series will also uncover deeper secrets involving an old makers’ accord, an erased legacy, and the suspicious death of Misty’s former witch.

The Soapmaker’s Familiar

She came to Wales looking for her ancestry. She found a new home, an old murder—and a cat who could talk.

After a painful breakup and a surprising discovery about her family history, American master soapmaker Elaine Bellamy travels to the coastal Welsh village of Trefalen. There she finds Vaughan’s Soapworks: a shuttered shop with a professional workshop, a walled botanical garden, and enough potential to persuade her to move across the Atlantic and begin again.

The property also comes with Misty, a green-eyed tortoiseshell possessing equal measures of sweetness, attitude, and opinions. Opinions she expresses out loud.

Misty was the familiar of Lowri Vaughan, the soapworks’ late owner and the keeper of a magical craft tradition embedded in the shop’s well-used tools. Elaine has barely begun settling into her new life when Carys Maddock—a heritage-business consultant with a complicated connection to Lowri—arrives asking unwelcome questions. Then Carys is murdered.

With suspicion creeping toward her new doorstep and nearly everyone connected to the soapworks concealing something, Elaine begins asking questions of her own. Her twenty-five years of soapmaking experience have taught her to observe materials, follow processes, and notice when something in a carefully constructed story does not belong.

DI Iwan Meredith would prefer that Elaine leave the investigation to the police. Misty would prefer that the police work faster. But when clues point toward Lowri’s hidden past, Elaine must uncover which secrets concern old craft magic—and which provide a very human motive for murder.

A Death at the Kiln

Her cat can talk. The jackdaw repeats secrets. Unfortunately, neither makes a reliable witness to murder.

Elaine Bellamy has begun building a home at Vaughan’s Soapworks. Her latest project pairs her artisan soaps with handmade ceramic dishes created by her friend Meera Shah—an ideal collaboration for the village’s upcoming ceramics weekend. At least, it is until visiting appraiser Aled Morris declares a prized antique tile a modern forgery.

The accusation threatens reputations, livelihoods, and more than one expensive collection. Then Aled is found dead in the restricted kiln room. With Meera’s access, expertise, and public argument making her the police’s most convincing suspect, Elaine begins examining the story built around her friend.

DI Iwan Meredith would prefer Elaine to respect the boundaries of an active investigation. Misty would prefer everyone to recognize the limitations of human reasoning. Meanwhile, Twm, a jackdaw with an alarming talent for mimicking voices, keeps repeating fragments of conversations without offering the minor convenience of context.

As Elaine follows a trail of copied histories, artificial aging, and concealed evidence, the mystery reaches from the community kiln to Lowri Vaughan’s unfinished research into the Trefalen Makers’ Accord. Someone has manufactured more than a ceramic’s past—and a break-in at the soapworks suggests Elaine is getting too close to discovering why.

To clear Meera, Elaine must separate old craft secrets from a very modern fraud before a carefully constructed lie hardens into accepted truth.
